Talman Keynote Address – Finn A. Hansel

A new era for the German cannabis industry
With the adoption of the CanG law earlier this year, Germany is now the top market for international cannabis investors. Germany’s market potential is unlike any other jurisdiction on the planet, and the opportunities that policy modernization in Germany has created are considerable. Already home to Europe’s largest overall economy and medical cannabis industry, the regulatory model in Germany can be tricky to navigate in the adult-use legalization era. Finn Hänsel, the Managing Director and Founder of industry-leading Sanity Group has founded five companies in addition to Sanity Group, including THE ICONIC, Berliner Berg Craft Beer, Sportsecondhand, Valmano, and Petobel. Mr. Hänsel will provide critical insight into effective strategies for investing in Germany’s emerging legal cannabis industry.

“Creativity does not age,” asserts DJ Muggs. Having released nearly 25 albums in the last five years alone, Muggs has prolific receipts to emphasize his point. The Soul Assassins founder credits health, a positive outlook, and an undying drive to advance culture. “I’m at the beginning of my career right now,” he claims. With hallways of platinum and gold plaques, multiple Grammy nominations, and a 35-year music career, Muggs focuses on the here-and-now much more than his resume. “Whatever I’ve done is cool,” he says in passing. On August 25, the respected artist and producer is culminating his legacy with his current creative headspace and next frontier. Soul Assassins 3 honors a time-tested tradition and trusted brand with a conceptual album involving Freddie Gibbs, Ghostface Killah, Westside Gunn, Ice Cube, Method Man, Boldy James, MC Ren, CeeLo Green, B-Real, Scarface, Roc Marciano, Evidence, Meyhem Lauren, Rome Streetz, Slick Rick, Jay Worthy, and more. Soul Assassins 3 is a multimedia experience, expanding to a September 15th Jason Goldwatch-directed film.

As an artist who draws inspiration from a range of sources, DJ Muggs’ life reflects that pursuit. He was born in New York City to a mother who immigrated from Italy. In 1984, the teenage Muggs moved to Los Angeles, where he befriended a group of peers that would become his collaborators. Muggs produced for several acts and competed as a turntablist before founding Cypress Hill. With MCs B-Real and Sen Dog, the multi-platinum group made history and broke down barriers reflecting LA street life with a passion for Hip Hop. Decades later, that balance of passion and authenticity is core to DJ Muggs’ career. In addition to Cypress Hill’s many accolades, he produced hits for Ice Cube, House Of Pain, and others. Muggs was an early bridge to Electronic music, a sought-out remixer for U2 and Janet Jackson, and a mentor to Alchemist, Funkdoobiest, and others. In the mid-1990s, he established Soul Assassins—a family of creatives in music, photography, tattoos, and other mediums. “We created a brotherhood that has become one of the most prolific crews ever in the history of this culture.”

Since the mid-2010s, Muggs has steadily created acclaimed, respected bodies of work with like-minded artists, including Meyhem Lauren, Roc Marciano, and Jay Worthy. Atop the 2020s, he vowed to follow up the Soul Assassins album series with a proper third entry. In 2022, songs like Slick Rick and Method Man’s “Metropolis” and Scarface and Freddie Gibbs’ “Street Made” forecasted the next Soul Assassins reign. It was part of a strategic plan to build towards something more significant. “The way music is digested and listened to these days, records seem like they come and go in a few weeks; they’re not lasting for years. You’re not keeping the same CD in your player like we used to do as kids. So what am I gonna do?” The rollout began over a year before the 2023 album. This summer, CeeLo and Muggs reunited for “Joker’s Wild,” a song recorded to a vintage Muggs beat that finds the Gnarls Barkley/Goodie Mob star showing love and respect to Cholo culture—through a first-person concept. It is the proper follow-up to 1997’s “Decisions, Decisions,” a song that earned CeeLo a Source “Hip Hop Quotable.”

“Jokers Wild” is not the only concept within Soul Assassins 3. Muggs and B-Real built on decades of chemistry with “Dump On ‘Em,” featuring Ice Cube and MC Ren. “I want the unexpected,” Muggs shares. “And nobody expects a Cypress x N.W.A. thing right now. It fits and sounds like a mid-’90s record—in a good way.” It also shows an artist presenting himself as a longtime bridge. The longtime Wu-Tang Clan and Griselda collaborator follows with “Sicilian Gold,” a song featuring Ghostface Killah and Westside Gunn. “This underground thing, five or six years ago, was dwindling,” the producer admits. “A few brothers kept it strong, like Alchemist and Daringer.” Muggs, who helped establish the rugged and raw Hip Hop sound in the first place, ignited its renaissance.

Rawness is paramount to Muggs. He describes his latest album, “It isn’t over-EQ’d, it’s just raw—simple. I’m capturing a vibe and not trying to overdo anything,” he notes.” “It’s energy.” While some producers are technical, Muggs thrives off of vibe and feeling.

Someone technical is director Jason Goldwatch. The veteran videographer who has worked with JAY-Z, The Roots, Atmosphere, and others joined Muggs in making an album into cinema. “We created a 33-minute psychedelic Hip Hop movie,” the producer explains. It is designed to be a lean-back extension of the album, with a concept created after the music. “We actually shot videos being played on TV, in the movie.”

Much of Soul Assassins 3: Death Valley was shot in its desert namesake. Muggs explains the concept and its metaphoric significance. “I left LA to get away from the heat in the streets. But it’s ironic; I moved to Death Valley, the hottest place on earth.” He adds, “It’s a magical place. When the mob buried people, the bodies weren’t buried in Vegas; they were buried in Death Valley.” No matter how remote, one cannot escape the consequences of their past. “There’s a lot of symbolism in this film. It’s street, but it’s also mystical and psychedelic.” There are references to lyrics, real-life street crews, and allusions to synthetic dope. The film counters the ephemeral nature of art in the 2020s. “This was the perfect thing to do. I wanted something bigger than a video. I’m trying to push further,” Muggs admits. “What haven’t I done? What excites me? How can I stretch who I am and what I am creatively? I want to inspire myself and trick my brain.”

Inspiration is a thread to DJ Muggs’ life and career. It fuels his passion. “My goal years ago was to sell a bunch of records and be the illest, and we did all that. Where do we go from here? To be creative, and have fun, and explore, and travel, and have new adventures all the time.” During the last decade, Muggs has made multiple albums on other continents, he has produced natural wine, he has raised a family, and he has built an incredible Southern California studio compound—all on his terms. “I don’t separate my music from my life anymore—it’s one big thing. I love traveling; I love culture—the people, the language, the food. It just turns my brain. That’s what feeds my creativity.”

Soul Assassins 3 is a manifestation. At a time when Hip-Hop’s grit and rawness are driving the sound once more, one of its sonic architects unveils new structures. “How do I make an album sound past, present, and future is one of the puzzles I wanted to solve,” he admits. In his film, the longtime visionary finds the perfect companion piece. “This record really is a movie,” Muggs touts. “It’s a kind of movie I don’t think the underground has seen yet.” In audio and on screen, the creative rebirth is taking place.

He has played a key role in professionalizing and mainstreaming the cannabis industry, building one of the United States’ most popular medical cannabis clinics and the first ever to advertise medical cannabis on network TV in the U.S. Living in five different countries throughout his life, and able to communicate in all respective languages, Alex considers himself an international citizen, thusly spawning the International Cannabis Business Conference (ICBC). The ICBC was the first cannabis business conference in the world to have multiple dates set in multiple countries on multiple continents and is the leading conference series in Europe. A Magna Cum Laude graduate majoring in Political Science, Rogers has used his knowledge of law and politics to push cannabis policy forward all over the world.
